Eclipse Extended Technologies For Embedded and Mobile Devices

The Eclipse Foundation, an open source community for building software, has added four new initiatives, as part of the Eclipse Device Software Development Platform (DSDP) Project to develop open source technologies.

The new technologies would allow developers to debug, manage and deploy software on embedded and mobile devices.

Real-Time Software Components (RTSC), Windows Embedded CE Support, Eclipse Device Debugging (DD) Project, and Target Communications Framework (TCF) are the four new initiatives. The 1.0 release of the Eclipse Device Debugging project will be made available as part of the Ganymede release train in June.

RTSC features Eclipse based tools for developing C and C++ applications devices such as digital signal processors (DSPs) and microcontrollers. With Windows Embedded CE Support developers can now edit, update and delete files directly on the Windows Embedded CE device. An extensible communication protocol to standardize the way development tools communicate with different devices is yet another feature of the Target Communications Framework.

According to the press release, nine open source projects are currently hosted at Eclipse to address the needs of embedded developers, including Eclipse C/C++ Development Tooling (CDT) Project.
